Unity Indigenous Plant Garden

A Living Exhibition

The Unity Indigenous Plant Garden-A Living Exhibition was created in partnership with the Musqueam, Skwxwu7mesh and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. This garden connects two MOV exhibition projects: “Wild Things: The Power of Nature in Our Lives (2018-2020)” and “That Which Sustains Us (opened in 2020),” both featuring traditional knowledge from these host nations.

hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ translations for the garden were provided by the Musqueam Language Department with approval of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation. Skwxwú7mesh snichim translations were provided by the Ta na wa Ns7éyx̱nitm ta Snew̓íyelh - the Squamish Nation Language and Cultural Affairs Team.

The Design

We acknowledge T'uy't'tanat Cease Wyss, Indigenous Plant diva from the Skwxwú7mesh Nation, for her work on the design and planting of this Indigenous Plant Garden.

She was assisted in her work by Geronimo Alec (Wet'suwet'en Nation), Valeen Jules (Nuucaañut & Kwakwakawakw Nations), and Aidan Thorne (Quw’utsun Nation).

A special thank you to Krista Voth of the Vancouver Parks Board for coordinating the removal of invasive species, sourcing and supplying the Indigenous plants for the garden, and her ongoing support of this project and other MOV Indigenous initiatives.
